Accordion / mega menu spontaneously re-orders, won't let us select articles, and won't show all items

We have used the mega menu for a number of years, and enjoy it.
However, it is becoming more and more unreliable.

1) it keeps on not letting us select the article to add to the menu item. We keep having to fix it. This time it was really difficult.
2) the menu order keeps on spontaneously changing to non-alphabetical
3) some of the items just won't show.

We are not on the current version, but there was a comment that the current version is not always what should be used.
We use jse_accordion_menu 2.1.1

Please help!

Does anyone have any ideas for parts of the issues?
Is it a problem elsewhere in our system?
We are going to have to find another menu supplier otherwise.
